Nigeria: Top athletes storm Port-Harcourt for AFN Golden League

Top local athletes have arrived in Port-Harcourt, Rivers state for the first leg of the 2012 Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Golden League meeting holding at the Adokie Amesiamaka Stadium this weekend.

The first of a six-leg athletics series, events listed for scoring include: 100m, 200m, 400m, 1500m, 5000m, 110m hurdles, triple jump, high jump, shot put, the 20km walk race and the relays (4x100m, 4x400m) for men and 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 400m Hurdles, long jump, high jump, javelin, hammer; 20km walk race and the relays for women.

Rita Akande, the assistant secretary of the AFN, confirmed that the Long jump, Javelin and 800m for men, and the 100m hurdles and shot put for women, will be open and available for All-Comers to participate in.

Akande also said that only the top four athletes in all the categories would proceed to the next leg of the league while the rest four will be from the All Comers that will precede the main events of the two-day athletics meet.

In addition, the AFN will be given out 10 points as bonus for any of the competing athletes that matched the London 2012 Olympics 'A' standard.
