Kampala, Uganda will host the IAAF World Cross Country Championships 2017, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Council announced at the Fairmont Hotel in Monaco on Tuesday.
This IAAF World Athletics Series competition will go back to Africa a decade after the IAAF World Cross Country Championships was last held on the continent, in neighbouring Kenya.
The Ugandan capital won the right to stage the competition after winning a vote against Manama, Bahrain, though the results of the actual voting were not announced.
The Hon. Charles Bakabulindi, Honorary State Minister of Education and Sport, and Ugandan Athletics Federation’s Domenic Otucet led the successful bid for Uganda’s first ever IAAF World Athletics Series competition.
The next edition of the IAAF World Cross Country Championships takes place in Guiyang, China on 28 March 2015. Mombasa, Kenya hosted an IAAF World Cross Country Championship event the last time it was held in Africa in 2007.
